Interesting Past Life Book
Saturday, February 24th, 2007It’s been a very busy time for me, with psychic fairs and such, and I apologize for not keeping up with this blog! I recently received one of Dick Sutphen’s newsletters and would like to copy some of it here. He’s quoting an excerpt from a book entitled “The Emerging New Age” by J.L. Simmons and I’m impressed by it, too. Here’s the excerpt:
“The shared past experiences can be extensive, covering long periods of time, or intensive, involving highly emotional incidents, or both. Also, they can be highly pleasant, mild, or rather unpleasant. Whatever the past content was, good or bad, the present contact can cause the welling up of strong emotions and body sensations. These age-old connections mean that nothing could be further from the truth than ‘love at first sight.’ Thus, beside ‘love at first sight,’ there is ‘fear at first sight’ (a former executioner), ‘gentle warmth at first sight’ (as toward a former child or favored pupil), ‘merriment at first sight’ (a former wild youthful companion), ‘hate at first sight’ (a former oppressor), ‘deep friendship at first sight’ (a former comrade-in-arms), ‘comfort at first sight’ (former good acquaintance), and so on.
“If the previous-life relationship involved heavy loss or unfinished business, there may well be a psychological clutching toward the other person, an ‘I don’t want to lose you (again)’ desperation. Even without this, the current meeting is likely to have a haunting quality to it because of the leakage of other memories from that time.
“Positive sorts of karmic connections from previous lifetimes have received much attention in the writings of Edgar Cayce, Jess Stearn, Dick Sutphen, and the reincarnationists in general. The ’soulmate’ is the most intense of these, in which affinities between two spirits are so great that they can achieve the extreme of togetherness, partially melting into one. The two beings, if they find one another, will literally do anything to be together, the magnetism is so strong. And if separated they are stricken, sometimes mortally. The soulmate experience is overwhelming and can sweep everything else away — current family, career, whatever. Some claim we have only one soulmate, some say several, and some say that far up the spiritual evolutionary
line everyone becomes a soulmate.
“Past-life therapists have written most about the more negative kinds of karmic relationships: ancient fears, dreads, and hatreds which color the current lifetime. Spontaneous discomfort or dislike on meeting someone seem at least as common as spontaneous liking or love. These seem to always involve some unresolved conflict or spiritual indebtedness, and seem best thought of as unfinished business, or what Michael refers to as the burning of karmic ribbons. Although concrete actions may sometimes be required to balance the books, the resolution
of such long-term conflicts seems mainly to require infusing the
connection with understanding, compassion, and acceptance of
responsibility for one’s own actions in the matter.
“The vast majority of karmic relationships are too complex to be placed simply in plus or minus categories. For example, I counseled one pair who had been together for at least a dozen lifetimes, mostly as companions but sometimes as lovers, and once as parent and child. The shared emotions included good times, precious moments, sexual thrills, griefs, betrayals, falling outs, infidelities, aid and emotional support, bereavements, and boredom, not to mention going broke together and getting rained on together. Not surprisingly, their feelings toward one another were deep but complicated. As they continue to evolve, the
spiritual guides tell us that these intricacies will be washed away, leaving between them only a love ‘that passeth understanding.”
