Psychic Children

Here’s a recent letter and my response:

Debbie,
I frequently listen to your programs on 93Q in the morning and have often been tempted to call in. I do however have a specific question. My husband, daughter (2 Y.O.) and I recently went through a loss and suddenly she appears to have a connection with the other side. She is saying and doing things that absolutely amaze me. How do i recognize if my child has a psychic or medium type of ability?

Hi - I’m sorry about your loss, but not surprised that your daughter is showing her “psychic” side. All humans have it, and until we’re grown a bit and trained to NOT be psychic, it comes very naturally. So children have this type of thing like you’re describing very easily and for them, it’s no big deal!

So I would go ahead and just assume she is, indeed, using her God-given psychic ability, no different than she would use her other God-given senses, such as an ability to see, hear or speak! I firmly believe that we were all meant to have this as one of our senses, to make our lives easier and more livable. As we know, people who can’t see or hear certainly can have good lives, just not quite as easy or livable as those who have all their senses intact - so when we all “shut down” our sixth sense, it just makes our lives a bit less rich and full.

Anyway, I’ll get off my soapbox! LOL! I think it’s wonderful that she’s showing this talent, and should be encouraged, or at least, not discouraged, when she talks about what she’s experiencing. I did a quick search on Amazon.com on “psychic children” and about 5 pages of books come up! So there’s definitely stuff out there for you to explore and learn more about this.

Sometimes I’m not the one…

Sometimes I’m just not the right person to help a client - as I had to say recently in response to an email I received:

Hello Debbie,

I’m a student here in Syracuse. My boyfriend (age 32) believes he was sexually abused by his mother’s boyfriend when he was two years old, but has no concrete memory of the event. He does, however, have horrible nightmares and feelings of dread. He has grown up with numerous emotional and psychological problems and seems to have all the classic symptoms of having been abused as a child. He has never been able to confront what may have happened to him, but has always wanted to attempt hypnotherapy in an attempt to regain his repressed memories, or else to finally put to rest what has haunted him his entire life. I’m asking if there is some way you could help him, and if so, what the cost of this would be. We’re both college students and don’t have a lot of money, but I feel this is extremely important in order for him to move on with his life, and a more normal state of being. In addition, it kills me to see the man I love carrying such a heavy burden on his shoulders. Thank you for your time.

Hi - I agree that hypnosis is a perfect tool for your boyfriend to get to the bottom of his issues, but I strongly recommend that he find a hypnotherapist with a psychology degree, which I don’t have. Although I have many years of experience that would be useful, since we already know going into it that he’s potentially opening a real “can of worms”, I feel that he’d be in better hands with someone who has the psychological training to offer whatever professional help he might need.

Also, I don’t know if he has insurance through the school, but with a qualified therapist, he’d likely get it covered by insurance.

There are many therapists in Syracuse that are also hypnotherapists, although I don’t have any names for you. If I were him, I’d actually try going through the school and see what they would offer either for free or on a sliding scale, with someone that is either affiliated with the school or otherwise cost-effective.

Thank you for contacting me, and I hope he finds the help he needs, it’s well worth pursuing!
